Short answer: Google Meet can transcribe a meeting on its own if your Google Workspace edition includes Transcripts (for example Business Standard, Business Plus or Enterprise plans). On a computer, click Meeting tools > Transcribe > Start transcription. When the meeting ends, the transcript is saved as a Google Docs file in the organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, and a link is emailed to the host. If your plan does not include it, you can record the call audio with a desktop app and transcribe it afterward, as long as everyone agrees to be recorded.
Every Google Meet detail below comes from Google's own help pages, checked on October 4, 2026. Google updates Meet often, so when in doubt, the linked help page is the reference.
Which Google Workspace plans include Meet transcription?
Meet transcripts are a premium feature. According to Google's Transcripts help page, they are available in these editions:
| Edition family | Editions listed by Google for Transcripts |
|---|---|
| Business | Business Standard, Business Plus |
| Enterprise | Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus |
| Education | Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus |
| Solo | Workspace Individual |
Two practical consequences. First, a free personal Google account (a plain Gmail address) is not on the list, and neither is Business Starter, so those users will not see the Transcribe option. Second, Google's admin help page on meeting transcription lists a shorter set of supported editions than the user page, so if your edition is borderline, ask your Workspace administrator to confirm.
On price, Google publishes per-user rates on its Workspace pricing page. When we checked in October 2026, the amounts shown depended on the visitor's country, the billing commitment and the introductory offers running at the time, so we are not quoting a figure here. Check the page for your region before you budget.
Admin side: Google says meeting transcripts are on by default for all Workspace editions, except Google Workspace for Education with a student license. Administrators can change the setting in the Google Admin console under Apps, Google Workspace, Google Meet, Meet video settings, Meeting transcripts. Google notes that changes can take up to 24 hours, and that on Business Standard the feature cannot be turned off in the Admin console.
How to turn on transcription in Google Meet
Who can start a transcript depends on one host setting. Google puts it this way: if Host management is off, anyone from the host's domain can turn on Transcripts; if Host management is on, only the host and co-hosts can. Once you have the right role, the steps are short.
Join the meeting on a computer
Open Google Meet on a computer or laptop and join or start the meeting. Google says Transcripts work only on a computer, laptop or Android device, so an iPhone or iPad will not show the option.
Open Meeting tools and choose Transcribe
At the bottom right of the meeting window, click Meeting tools, then Transcribe, then Start transcription.
Confirm in the pop-up
Click Start in the pop-up. A Transcripts icon then appears at the top right for everyone in the meeting, so participants can see that the call is being transcribed.
Stop the transcript when you are done
Click Meeting tools, then Transcribing, then Stop transcription, or click Stop transcribing, and confirm with Stop. You cannot pause a transcript, but you can stop it and start a new one; each start creates a separate transcript file. If you do nothing, it stops automatically when all participants leave.
Open the transcript after the meeting
The host, any co-hosts and the person who started the transcript receive an email with a link. The file is saved as a Google Docs file in the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, and is attached to the Google Calendar event.
Start transcription automatically
Hosts can also set a meeting to transcribe itself. When creating the meeting, click Video call options > Meeting records and select Transcribe the meeting. Two details from Google's help page matter here: the feature will not start until the host or a co-host joins the meeting on the web, and participants who join get an on-screen warning that it is active.
Explicit consent prompts
Your administrator can require every participant to give explicit consent before transcription, recording or Take notes for me starts. Google says this setting is off by default; when it is on, each participant chooses to continue or leave.
Where are Google Meet transcripts saved?
The answer changed in 2026. According to Google:
- Google Drive: transcripts are saved in the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, with a subfolder created for each meeting. Google's admin help describes the file as a Google Docs file.
- Older transcripts: starting July 2026, the old "Meet Recordings" folder is renamed "Legacy Meet Recordings" and moved inside the new Google Meet folder. Your old transcripts are still there.
- Email: after the meeting, an automated email with a link goes to the host, any co-hosts and the person who turned on Transcripts. Longer meetings take longer to process; the admin help page says it usually takes a few hours and can take up to 24 hours.
- Google Calendar: the transcript is attached to the meeting's Calendar event. All invitees in the host's organization can open it, unless there are more than 200 invitees in that organization, in which case only the host, co-hosts and the person who started the transcript have access.
Storage matters: Google says you can record a transcript only if there is enough space in both your organization's Google Drive and the meeting host's Drive. A full Drive is one of the less obvious reasons a transcript never appears.
Transcript, recording or "Take notes for me": what is the difference?
Google Meet has three features that sound alike but produce different things.
| Feature | What you get | Key limits (per Google) |
|---|---|---|
| Transcripts | A text record of the spoken words, saved to the organizer's Drive | Spoken words only, no chat; computer, laptop or Android; 8 languages |
| Recording | A video file of the active speaker and anything presented, saved in the organizer's Drive (with a chat log in some cases) | Computer or Android; the host must have permission to record |
| Take notes for me (Gemini) | AI-generated meeting notes in Google Docs, such as a summary and next steps, emailed after the meeting | Eligible Workspace edition or Google AI plan; one language at a time; recommended for 15 minutes to 8 hours |
A few points worth knowing about each:
- Chat is not in the transcript. Google says only spoken words are included; to keep chat messages, record the meeting, which can also save a chat log in the organizer's Drive.
- Recording has its own edition list. It is not identical to the transcript list: for example, Google lists Google One subscribers with 2 TB or more of storage for recording, but not for transcripts.
- Take notes for me is a summary, not a verbatim record. According to Google's Take notes for me help page, it requires an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan, works in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, and supports only one language per meeting. The organizer's sharing settings decide who receives the notes, and the notes document is saved in the organizer's Drive, in the Google Meet folder.
Which languages does Google Meet transcription support?
As of October 2026, Google lists eight languages for meeting transcripts: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Take notes for me lists the same eight, with one constraint: one language at a time, since mixed-language meetings are not currently supported. For other languages, you will need an external transcription tool.
Google Meet transcript not working? Check these first
When the Transcribe option is missing or no transcript arrives, check the conditions Google documents:
- Your edition does not include Transcripts. Personal Gmail accounts and Business Starter are not on Google's list.
- You are on an iPhone or iPad. Transcripts work on a computer, laptop or Android device only.
- You do not have the right role. With Host management on, only the host and co-hosts can start it. With it off, you still need to be in the host's domain.
- Your administrator turned it off for your organization or your department. Changes can take up to 24 hours to apply.
- Drive is full. Both the organization's Drive and the host's Drive need enough space. Google's admin help also says Drive must be turned on and users must be able to create Docs files.
- Automatic transcription did not start because no host or co-host joined the meeting on the web.
- The email has not arrived yet. Long meetings take longer to process. Search Drive for "transcript", which is part of the file name.
If your admin has disabled transcription: do not try to work around it. Organizations turn the feature off for reasons such as confidentiality or retention rules. Check with your admin or IT team before recording or transcribing the meeting by any other method, including the alternative below.
The alternative: record the call audio and transcribe it afterward
The built-in feature is the right default when you have it. An external tool makes sense in a few specific cases: your plan does not include Transcripts, the meeting runs in a language Meet does not transcribe, you want speaker-separated text and a structured recap in one place, or you also run calls on Teams and Zoom and want one workflow for all of them. In every case, the conditions stay the same: your organization allows it, and every participant agrees to be recorded.
There are two ways to do it with AudiosTranscribe:
- Record with the Windows desktop app. The AudiosTranscribe desktop app (Windows 10 and 11 only) captures your computer's system audio and your microphone at the same time, so it hears the other participants and you. No bot joins the Meet call. When you stop recording, the app sends the audio for transcription when you click Send, or automatically if you turn on auto-send. The transcript is produced after the recording, not live during the meeting.
- Upload a recording. If the meeting was already recorded in Meet, download the video from the organizer's Drive (Google's help explains how) and upload it in the web app. This works on any operating system.
What you get with AudiosTranscribe
- Voices separated automatically, and you assign names to each speaker in one click
- An AI summary after each transcription (basic on the free plan), with decisions and action items on paid plans
- Hosted in Europe, GDPR-compliant, with audio deleted after processing
- Free plan: 120 minutes of transcription per month, no credit card. Paid plans: Starter at €9/month (400 minutes) and Pro at €24/month (1,200 minutes), billed monthly, with exports to DOCX, PDF, SRT and TXT. VAT not applicable. See pricing for annual rates and the Team plan.
Step by step with the desktop app
- Check you are allowed to record. Confirm your organization's policy, then tell every participant at the start of the call and get their agreement.
- Check the audio sources: the app selects your microphone and system sound by default.
- Start recording just before the meeting, join Google Meet as usual, and stop the recording when the call ends.
- Get the transcript, then name the speakers in one click and review the summary.
Whichever tool produced the transcript, the last step is turning it into minutes people will read. Our meeting minutes template gives you a structure for decisions, owners and deadlines. The same recording workflow applies to other platforms too: see our guides to transcribing a Microsoft Teams meeting and transcribing a Zoom meeting.
Recording consent: tell everyone first
Google Meet shows participants an icon or a warning when its own transcription is running. An external recorder does not trigger any notification inside Meet, so telling people is entirely your job. Our rule is simple: get the consent of every participant before you record, every time.
The legal picture varies by place. In the US, the federal wiretap statute (18 U.S.C. § 2511) allows a person who is a party to a conversation to record it, or anyone to record with the prior consent of one party, unless the purpose is criminal or tortious. Some states go further: California's Penal Code section 632 makes it an offense to record a confidential communication without the consent of all parties. In the UK and the EU, data protection rules (the GDPR and UK GDPR) also apply to recordings of identifiable voices, which generally means telling people what you record and why. Calls often cross state or national borders, so asking everyone is the safe habit. This is general information, not legal advice; check with your legal team for your situation.
Which option should you choose?
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Eligible Workspace edition, you need a text record | Native Meet Transcripts, included in your plan |
| Eligible plan, you want a summary rather than a verbatim record | Take notes for me (Gemini), if your plan includes it |
| Transcription disabled by your admin | Ask your admin or IT team first; do not work around the policy |
| Personal Gmail account or Business Starter | Record with everyone's consent and transcribe afterward, or upload an existing recording |
| Meeting in a language Meet does not transcribe | An external transcription tool |
| You use Meet, Teams and Zoom | One cross-platform workflow, such as the AudiosTranscribe desktop app on Windows |
If the native feature covers you, use it: it is already paid for, it notifies participants, and the file lands in Drive where your team expects it.
